This local history of the  Prophetstown-Lyndon-Tampico-Deer Grove area was written and illustrated by the Tampico Middle School 7th graders as part of a cross-curricular unit during the spring of 1999.
     After learning about the prehistory of northern Illinois in sixth grade, these students continued their study of our history from the time of early man’s arrival to the early 1800’s.  Students used many books, newspapers, and the Internet to research the Winnebago, Sauk and Fox Indians who lived in this area. The seventh graders listened to local historians, Bev Peterson and Neal Oppendike; sketched and scanned pictures; then compiled their information to create this booklet. Copies are available at the local historical society museums, the libraries and the schools.
    Students are also developing a corresponding website which includes pictures of their model Indian village, pictures of the students making Indian crafts and foods, and links to sites for further information.  The site will be updated as additional information is found.  Suggestions from the community are welcome.
    The seventh graders and their teachers wish to thank the Educational Foundation, Mrs. Peterson, Mr. Oppendike, the Adam’s Memorial Library, our three local historical societies, Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Lawrence, Mrs. Higgins, Mrs. Marschang, Bridgette Brogie, Dr. DeLacey, and Mr. Engwall for their assistance and encouragement in this project.
