Resource Directory - Abuse

PURPOSE: Provides children and youth the opportunity to enhance and develop social skills, self-confidence and life skills education through consistent, positive contact with an adult mentor.
SERVICES: Big Brothers/Big Sisters is a program that provides one-to-one adult guidance, mentoring and friendship to children. The program focuses on building the child’s self-esteem/confidence level, relationships with peers and adults, and providing the child with a variety of activities and experiences.  These can be either in the community based or school based programs.
ELIGIBILITY: Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
  • The child must be between the ages of 6 and 16.
  • The child must reside in Whiteside, Lee or Carroll County.
  • The child must be available 2-3 hours per week for volunteer contact, for at least one year.
  • The child must be interested in participating in the program and must be able to benefit from it.  The program reserves the rights to determine which clients are able to benefit in cases of mental handicap, mental disorders, or other situations.
  • The parent/guardian must be willing to participate and support the match.
  • Legal custody issues for the child must be resolved prior to her/his being considered eligible for services.
